Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP) is a National Park in, Accra, Ghana named after Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the ‘’founding father’’ of Ghana.
Dr. Nkrumah gained independence from the British, then a colonial authority over what was known as The Gold Coast, on March 6, 1957. He became the first Prime Minister from that date to June 30, 1960. He led Ghana into a Republican status on July 1, 1966 and became the first President of the Republic of Ghana. On February 24, 1966 his government was over thrown in a Military coup d’etat and was ousted from power.
This Park is located in the main commercial area in Accra on The High Street, a colonial legacy, where the Banks of Ghana are sited. The Park has a surface area of 5.4 acres and it is directly opposite Old Parliament House (now Offices of Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and Serious Fraud Office (SFO), which is also a colonial legacy. It is bounded on the east by The Centre for National Culture, Greater Accra Region and a vibrant craft centre and in the west by former Accra Community Centre, now some offices of Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
As Ghana plunged into various governments both by the military regimes and civilian governments from 1966 to 1978, the image of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who had died whilst in exile in the Republic of Guinea in 1972 slowly got restored. This monument in his honour to re-engineer his image was commissioned on July 1, 1992 at what used to be called The Old polo Grounds. In fact , it was these same grounds that Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah had the privilege to declare Ghana independence of Colonial rule.
Major structures at the Park when the facility was commissioned are:
Mausoleum where the mortal remains of Dr. Nkrumah lie finally after 2 previous burials-first at Conakry, Guinea in Camayeen Mausoleum and for the 2nd time at Nkroful his hometown. A huge bronze statue (about 10.8 ft. in height) of Dr. Nkrumah erected on a pedestal and mounted at the same spot where a platform was raised for him to deliver his statement of independence by the eve of March 6, 1957. A personal museum on Dr. Nkrumah. Fountains, significant trees planted by distinguished personalities who have been requested to do so whilst on state visit to Ghana and manicured lawns. And Office buildings.
These structures have interesting symbolic interpretations as regards the life and works of Dr. Nkrumah. KNMP is an autonomous subverted organization. The Park has an Executive Director who is answerable to a Board, whose membership is appointed by the President of the Republic of Ghana upon the recommendation of the Chairman of National Commission on National Cultures (NCC), through The Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs and Culture.
